America on the move: Moving trends in America
If there’s one thing that’s for certain, it’s that thousands of Americans are on the move every day. They move out from one place and find a new home elsewhere. Sometimes, they move just a few streets away from their previous homes. Sometimes, they move to a different time zone. This decision is spurred by life choices like employment, relationships, and family. Real estate expert Travis Cadman of Investar USA has interesting insights on moving trends across America.
It’s interesting that more than half of America’s states register as balanced in terms of inbound and outbound movement. That means that in 26 states, the same number of people who are moving out are about the same ones that are moving in, keeping the population level. This does mean that some states have shown more inbound and outbound activity. In fact, 13 states have more people moving out while 11 have more people moving in.
In 2019, the state with the greatest number of people moving out is New York, with a migration pattern of 62.7% of its population moving out. The state with the most people moving into in terms of migration pattern is Idaho with 62.3%.
Looking at the data, it’s also not surprising that most states in the northern part of America like Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota have migration patterns that are outbound, possibly due to climate reasons. Similarly, Louisiana also suffered from major storms in the last few years and more and more people have been moving out since.
Based on current data, Travis Cadman of Investar USA reads that people seem to be flocking into the central and western side of the country. States such as Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and even Washington received more people in 2019. On the eastern side, only small states like Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina recorded upticks in terms of inbound movement.
